Meeting Crazy Horse up close and personal

One of our destinations along this trip was to walk all the way up to Crazy Horse and pose on his arm. The Placer Pacers, a walking club from Auburn, of which we are members, had about 25 of its members travel to South Dakota for this once a year event. The plan is to walk from the Visitors Center up to the face of the monument. We joined 5000 walkers, infants to eighties, walking through the woods and along trails hinting of wildflowers. Then we climbed the construction switchback. After four miles, we turned a corner and there was Crazy Horse in all his majesty. We were close enough to touch his granite face. Towering above up were his truly chiseled features. His eyes seemed to gaze intensely at the land beyond. We then moved on to the tip of where his finger will be as he points to the land where his people roamed for centuries. This was a wonderful experience and worth the minimal discomfort to the body.
